Packing Essentials: Type 1 Diabetes Edition

Packing can feel like a chore, especially with diabetes supplies to take into account, but it doesn’t need to be!

My go-to method involves keeping a note on my phone called “generic packing list”, copying this to a new page & editing it based on where I’m going and how long I will be there.

You can download the PDF I made of the packing list for free and print it off to tick off items you have packed for your next trip, or to edit in a tablet app which allows for editing PDF’s. Let me know if this is useful for anyone?

Alternatively, here’s my checklist from my generic notes you can feel free to copy and paste to your notes!

Medication

Insulin vials

Spare fiasp (fast acting pens)

Spare lantus (background pens)

Pen needles

Insulin pump consumables

Cartridge

Needles & Syringes

Infusion sets

Cartridge remover

Charger

Blood glucose monitoring

Dexcom G6

Glucose test strips

Ketone test strips

Glucometer

Lancets

Miscellaneous

Spare syringes

Frio wallet

Glucose gels

Dextrose tablets

Levothyroxine

Paracetamol

Electrolytes

Alcohol wipes

Dexcom over patches

Sharps box

Needle remover

Liquids bag if applicable

Insulin vials

Fiasp insulin pens

Lantus insulin pens

Glucose gels

I always bring around 2-3x the amount of insulin & pump supplies I think I need. For example, if I’m going away for a week, that’s 2 or 3 pump changes. So I will bring 4-6 infusion sets, 4-6 cartridges and 4-6 needles & syringes.

I don’t often need the extra supplies, but if water activities are involved, pump sites are more likely to come off, so it’s always good to have back up. It’s also good for peace of mind that you’re covered if anything goes awry.

I hope this is useful and helps to ease the heavy burden that can be packing for trips with type 1 diabetes, good luck!

Thank you so much for reading,

Love, Lydia x
